Edinburgh bike life

How easy is it to use a bicycle for everyday journeys in Edinburgh?

This blog records my thoughts and experiences of using a bicycle to get around Edinburgh.

Supermarket shopping by bike. Why don't more people do it?

A red painted cycle lane
The only cycle lane on my route to the supermarket
Four years ago I wrote about using a bicycle for supermarket shopping. I argued the lack of segregated bike lanes was a barrier to people biking to the supermarket. In that 4 year period the council put in one piece of infrastructure on the route I take to the supermarket. Has it helped to encourage more people to cycle to the supermarket?

The Union Canal
This blog discusses the problems with the Union Canal that make it unsuitable for everyday cycling journeys. For example, the volume of people using the very narrow path, the blind spots and poor access onto the path.

The challenge of passing parked vehicles

Parked cars
I discuss why parked vehicles can pose a risk to people cycling.

Lockdown positives, quieter main roads

Lockdowns meant quieter roads. This gave me the confidence to cycle on roads that I usually avoided. That confidence continued even after the roads got busier again.
